When looking out for the welfare of our pets, there are two key questions we need to ask ourselves: Are they healthy? And do they have what they want? As (sadly) we are not able to communicate with animals verbally, we need to carefully observe and understand their body language.

Fish can be fascinating pets! They are intelligent, delightful and charismatic animals. However, they are not an “easy” pet to care for. There are some key factors to consider before choosing to take on the responsibility of a fish.

​SPCA advocates that the chosen method of tagging and marking minimises the welfare impacts on wildlife.

​SPCA advocates for people to engage in activities that respect wild bird welfare, including their health, and the health of their environments.

​SPCA advocates for fertility control be adopted by wild horse advisory groups as a tool to reduce the need for mustering, rehoming, euthanasia, or slaughter. SPCA advocates for feral horse management to be conducted with only the most humane methods of control.

​SPCA opposes the killing of wild predators, such as seals or seabirds, to protect fish farms. SPCA is concerned with the use of deterrent and exclusion devices, where the welfare impacts on wild animals are poorly understood.

SPCA opposes the practice of feeding farmed fish with purpose-caught wild forage fish.

​SPCA advocates for human and animal interactions that promote a Good Life where the animal experiences positive welfare and where the physical, health, and behavioural needs of animals are met before, during, and after the show.

​SPCA advocates for children’s involvement in activities that help develop an understanding of and empathy for all animals.  SPCA opposes animal hunts and trapping, and use of dead animals in contests, taking place in association with schools or communities and with the involvement of children.
